Bangkok for US Travelers: When to Fly, Where to Land, What It Costs
Bangkok has two airports, no nonstop from the US, and a price curve that swings 3x across the year. Here's the framework for booking the trip without overpaying.
Bangkok is the cheapest major Asian capital to visit from the United States, but the flights to get there are not cheap. There is no nonstop. Every itinerary connects somewhere: Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei, Hong Kong, Doha, Dubai, or one of the Chinese mainland hubs. Round-trip economy from the US west coast clears $890 in February and $1,790 in late June. The good news: a $40-a-day Bangkok budget still works in 2026 if you avoid the international hotel chains, so the flight is roughly 70% of your trip cost.
Bangkok's two airports, and why it matters
Bangkok is served by two commercial airports. They function very differently:
| Airport | IATA | Distance to city | What flies there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suvarnabhumi | BKK | 19 miles east | All long-haul international, full-service carriers |
| Don Mueang | DMK | 16 miles north | AirAsia, Nok, Lion Air, Thai Lion, regional low-cost |
If you're flying from the US, you're landing at BKK. Full stop. Don Mueang only matters if you're connecting onward to a regional low-cost carrier (Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, Hanoi, Singapore on Scoot or AirAsia). The trap: a same-day connection between BKK and DMK is 90 minutes by taxi minimum, longer in rush hour. Don't book a 3-hour layover between the two airports. I've watched that connection fail more times than I can count.
Cheapest months to fly
Thailand's tourist season runs cool-and-dry November through February, hot March through May, and rainy June through October. Pricing inverts the obvious logic, sort of.
| Month | West coast round-trip economy (typical low) | East coast (typical low) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | $1,090 | $1,290 | Pricey first 2 weeks (Lunar New Year demand), softens late |
| February | $890 | $1,090 | Best value for peak weather |
| March | $890 | $1,090 | Still fine, hotter |
| April | $1,150 | $1,350 | Songkran festival mid-month spikes prices |
| May | $890 | $1,090 | Quiet, hot, occasional rain |
| June | $1,290 | $1,490 | Inexplicable summer spike, US-side demand |
| July | $1,490 | $1,690 | Peak |
| August | $1,390 | $1,590 | Peak |
| September | $890 | $1,090 | Best deal of the year |
| October | $990 | $1,190 | Rainy but cheap |
| November | $1,150 | $1,390 | Demand returns |
| December | $1,490 | $1,690 | Holiday peak |
The September dip is the one most travelers miss. The rain is real but it's not all day. Afternoon thunderstorms for 90 minutes, then it clears. Hotels and flights are both 30-40% off peak, and the temples are uncrowded.
How US travelers actually get there
From the West Coast, the routings worth pricing first:
- EVA Air via Taipei (TPE): typically the cheapest premium economy and business class on the route. The Boeing 777-300ER is in a clean three-class config with 1-2-1 reverse-herringbone J seats. EVA's TPE-BKK leg is 3.5 hours on a 787-9.
- Korean Air via Seoul (ICN): solid product top to bottom, ICN is the easiest hub airport in Asia for a long layover, and Korean's Prestige business class on the A380 (when scheduled) is one of the better award redemptions.
- Japan Airlines via Tokyo (HND or NRT): highest service quality in economy, often the most expensive. JAL's HND arrival saves you the 90-minute NRT-Tokyo airport transfer if you want to stop over for 24 hours.
- ANA via Tokyo: similar to JAL, slightly different schedule pattern.
- Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong (HKG): strong product, schedule depends on day of week. HKG-BKK is 2.5 hours.
- Singapore Airlines via Singapore (SIN): long detour, usually expensive, but the SIN-BKK leg is 2.5 hours and Singapore's product is excellent.
From the East Coast, the calculus changes. A connection through Doha on Qatar Airways (JFK-DOH-BKK) is often the cheapest premium-cabin option for business class flights, and the Qsuite hard product is genuinely the best in the sky. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul also prices well, especially in shoulder months.

The award sweet spots
Three redemptions stand out for Bangkok:
- ANA Mileage Club: 75,000 miles round-trip in business class on a partner carrier. Transfer from Amex Membership Rewards 1:1. Catch: ANA charges fuel surcharges on most partner awards.
- Air Canada Aeroplan: 75,000-87,500 miles each way in business on partners (EVA, ANA, JAL, Singapore). Aeroplan does not pass fuel surcharges to its members on most partner bookings. Transfer from Amex, Chase, Bilt, Capital One.
- Singapore KrisFlyer: 92,000 miles each way in business on Singapore Airlines, transferable from every major US flexible currency.
For cash bookings, run the search on premium cabin flights with flexible date windows. Tuesday and Wednesday departures price 15-25% below Thursday and Sunday on this route, consistently.
Where to stay (and what it costs)
The budget framework that holds up in Bangkok in 2026:
- $30-50/night: Clean 3-star hotels in Sukhumvit (Asoke, Phrom Phong, Thong Lo) or Silom. Examples include Citadines, Aloft Sukhumvit 11, Galleria 10. Rooftop pool, decent breakfast.
- $80-130/night: 4-star international brands. Marriott Sukhumvit, Pullman G, Anantara Riverside if you book 3 months out.
- $200+/night: Mandarin Oriental, Capella, Four Seasons. Rates vary 2-3x based on month.
For the cheapest hotels, avoid the Khao San Road backpacker strip if you're past 30 and avoid Pratunam if you don't enjoy garment-district chaos at 6 AM. Sukhumvit BTS line stops are the right anchor for a first-time visit.
Getting around
Bangkok's BTS Skytrain and MRT subway cover most tourist neighborhoods. Single rides are 25-60 baht (about $0.70-$1.70). Grab is the standard ride-hail app. Taxis are metered but drivers sometimes refuse to use the meter for tourists, which has been the case as long as I've been flying through here. Taking a taxi from BKK to Sukhumvit costs 350-500 baht plus a 50-baht airport surcharge and tolls. Don't pay more than 600 baht total at the curb.
Airport rail link from BKK to Phaya Thai station is 45 baht and 26 minutes, the fastest option in rush hour. From DMK, the regular city bus or a Grab is the call. There's no rail link from DMK.
When the State Department posts an advisory, read it
Thailand's overall security environment is stable for tourism, but the southern provinces (Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, Songkhla) have a long-running insurgency. Per the State Department's Thailand travel advisory, most visitors don't go anywhere near these provinces, but if Phuket or Krabi is your secondary stop, you're on the right side of the country.
US citizens get 60 days visa-free on arrival as of 2026. Bring a passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining and proof of onward travel.

Frequently asked questions
How long is the flight from the US to Bangkok?
West coast total travel time runs 18-22 hours including a layover. East coast is 22-26 hours. The flying time alone (US-hub plus hub-BKK) is roughly 16-19 hours.
Is Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang better?
For international arrivals from the US, you'll always be at BKK (Suvarnabhumi). Don Mueang is for regional low-cost connections within Asia. Don't try to make a same-day BKK-DMK transfer with less than 4 hours.
What's the cheapest month to fly to Bangkok from the US?
September is the lowest by a clear margin, with February and March close behind. Avoid June through August and the Christmas-New Year window if you have flexibility.
Do I need a visa for Thailand?
US passport holders get 60 days visa-free on arrival as of 2026. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months and have one blank page. Onward travel proof can be requested.
Is it safe to walk around Bangkok at night?
Most tourist areas (Sukhumvit, Silom, Riverside) are safer at midnight than most US downtowns. Watch for petty theft on crowded BTS trains and around tourist scams in the Grand Palace area during the day.
