Domestic

Domestic flights

50 states, five major carriers, five low-cost carriers. Here's how to pick.

|

Live fares from hundreds of airlines.

US domestic is one of the most-served air travel markets in the world. American, Delta, United, Southwest, and Alaska form the major-carrier tier with full in-flight service and comprehensive route networks. JetBlue, Spirit, Frontier, Allegiant, and Breeze form the low-cost tier with cheaper base fares and unbundled ancillary fees.

For anything longer than 3 hours or requiring connections, the major carriers usually net out cheaper once you add baggage and seat-selection to the low-cost fare. For short, simple hops with a carry-on only, Spirit or Frontier can save real money.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a passport for domestic flights?
No, a state-issued ID is sufficient. As of May 2025 that ID must be REAL ID compliant (indicated by a star in the corner) OR you must present a passport or other accepted federal ID. Children under 18 flying domestic don't need any ID.
How early should I get to the airport for domestic flights?
90 minutes before departure for peak periods at major hubs (ATL, ORD, LAX, JFK, SFO), 60 minutes elsewhere. TSA PreCheck can shave that by 20–30 minutes. With checked bag, add 15 minutes.
Can I check a bag on a basic economy domestic ticket?
Yes, basic economy usually includes a carry-on and a personal item but charges extra for checked bags (except on United's basic economy, which has historically restricted overhead bag access too). Always check your specific airline and fare.
