LAX to Sydney: Cheapest Months, Best Airlines, and the Stopover Play
Nonstop LAX-SYD swings from $900 in April to $2,400 at Christmas. Here's when to book, which carrier wins, and why a Fiji or Auckland stopover can save you more than a sale fare.
Nonstop LAX to SYD runs roughly 14 hours 45 minutes westbound and 13 hours 30 minutes coming home. Economy fares swing from about $900 in April and May to $2,400 across Christmas and the first week of January. Three carriers fly it nonstop: Qantas, United, and Delta since 2022. I used to price this route from the rev-mgmt desk, and the pattern barely changes year to year.
The cheapest months to fly LAX-SYD
Australia's shoulder seasons line up almost perfectly with soft demand out of Los Angeles. April, May, and the back half of September through early November are where nonstop economy drops into three-figure territory. I've seen $890 round trips on United in early May when Qantas was holding $1,400 for the same dates.
Avoid the obvious spikes: US Thanksgiving week, the December 18 through January 8 window, and Australia's late-June to mid-July school break that drags return fares up on eastbound legs.
| Month | Typical economy round trip (USD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| January (after the 8th) | $1,100 - $1,400 | Post-holiday dump, good value |
| February | $1,000 - $1,300 | Stable, low demand |
| March | $1,050 - $1,350 | Australian autumn, pleasant weather |
| April | $900 - $1,200 | Cheapest month, consistently |
| May | $900 - $1,250 | Still cheap, weather turns cool in Sydney |
| June | $1,200 - $1,600 | AU school holidays push fares up |
| July | $1,300 - $1,700 | Peak US summer plus AU holidays |
| August | $1,100 - $1,500 | Eases after mid-August |
| September | $950 - $1,300 | Second-cheapest window |
| October | $950 - $1,350 | Great weather both ends |
| November (pre-Thanksgiving) | $1,050 - $1,400 | Watch for early-December sales |
| December (18th onward) | $2,000 - $2,400 | Avoid if at all possible |
These are the prices I see booking 60 to 120 days out. Inside 21 days, expect to pay 40% more, sometimes double.
Which airline wins on LAX-SYD
Three nonstop options, three different products:
Qantas
Qantas flies the A380 on QF12 and the 787-9 on QF94 out of Melbourne with a Brisbane tag. The A380 is the one you want if you're over six feet. The 2-4-2 economy layout with 32-inch pitch is the most forgiving long-haul seat I've flown. Premium economy on the A380 is genuinely good value at around $3,200 round trip, and business class runs $7,500 to $9,500.
United
United runs the 787-9 as UA 839 out of LAX daily. Polaris business is a solid hard product, though the 787 cabin feels cramped compared to Qantas's A380 upper deck. United wins on price 9 times out of 10 in economy. Check United's Polaris business class configuration before booking, because the seat varies by aircraft subtype.
Delta
Delta added LAX-SYD in October 2022 using the A350-900, flying as DL 41. Delta One on the A350 is arguably the best business-class hard product on the route, with direct aisle access from every seat. In economy, Delta Comfort+ is worth the upcharge on a 14-plus hour flight if you're tall.
The stopover play almost nobody uses
Skipping the nonstop and routing through Fiji on Fiji Airways or through Auckland on Air New Zealand can shave $300 to $500 off an economy ticket and hand you a free stopover at either end. Fiji Airways sells a Nadi stopover as part of the fare rules at no extra charge for up to seven days.
This is the kind of construction that used to pay my commission at the consolidator desk. The published LAX-SYD fare is rarely the cheapest way to get to Sydney. Sometimes the cheapest business class to Sydney in a given month routes you through Auckland on a combined Air New Zealand and Qantas itinerary.
Four considerations before you book a stopover routing:
- Total elapsed time jumps from 14 hours to 22-28 hours. Build in a real layover, not a three-hour tag.
- Fiji Airways and Air New Zealand don't partner with every US-based frequent flyer program. Check mileage-earning carefully.
- Customs and immigration in Nadi, Auckland, and Sydney all require a visitor visa or ETA for US passport holders. Sort it before you leave.
- Award availability through partners is often better than cash. Look at ANA, British Airways Avios, and Delta SkyMiles redemptions on the same flights.
When to book
The booking curve on LAX-SYD is flatter than transatlantic, partly because the route has less competition. My general rule: 75 to 110 days out for peak, 45 to 90 days out for shoulder. Inside 21 days, fares climb fast because corporate demand fills the front cabin and revenue management pulls the cheap economy buckets.
I still check once a week starting four months before departure, and I watch for single-carrier flash drops from United more than Qantas. United will occasionally run a sub-$900 sale from LAX in April or September that lasts under 48 hours.
For broader South Pacific planning, browse current flights to the South Pacific across all three US gateways, not just LAX. Sometimes SFO or DFW is cheaper on the same dates because of how airlines balance capacity.
Picking the right LAX terminal
Qantas departs Tom Bradley International (TBIT). United uses Terminal 7 with international processing at TBIT on arrival. Delta uses Terminal 3, which connects airside to TBIT via the Midfield Satellite Concourse. Arrivals at LAX from Sydney all clear customs at TBIT regardless of carrier.
See the full flights from LAX list if you're considering a connecting itinerary through LAX from another US city. Building a same-day connection to a 10 PM departure requires at least a three-hour buffer because of the evening TBIT security crush.
Call our booking team for quotes that beat the public fare on stopover routings, request a callback and we'll call you back within 30 minutes.
Frequently asked questions
Is the LAX-SYD nonstop faster than connecting through Auckland?
Yes, by a lot. Nonstop is 14 hours 45 minutes westbound. Connecting through Auckland typically runs 19 to 24 hours door to door, depending on layover length. You trade time for money, and sometimes for a free second destination.
Is Delta One on the A350 better than Qantas business on the A380?
Delta One on the A350 has direct aisle access from every seat, which Qantas's A380 business does not. Qantas wins on bed length and cabin width. If you're tall, I'd pick Qantas. If you're an aisle-access purist, Delta.
Can I use Delta SkyMiles on Qantas LAX-SYD?
No. Delta and Qantas are not partners. Use American AAdvantage or Alaska Mileage Plan for Qantas awards. Alaska is often the cheapest mileage currency for Qantas business class.
What's the best time to arrive in Sydney?
Qantas and United both land around 6:30 AM local time. Plan for a check-in bag drop at your hotel rather than a room at 7 AM. Delta lands closer to 8:30 AM, which pairs slightly better with most hotel housekeeping schedules.
Do I need a visa for Australia on a US passport?
Yes. You need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authority, subclass 601) before departure. It costs AUD 20 and you apply through the official Australian government site. Airlines will deny boarding without it.
