Taipei for US Travelers: When to Fly, Where to Land, and What It Costs in 2026
Round-trip economy from the US West Coast to Taipei runs $750 to $1,150 most of the year, and EVA Air still flies the 777-300ER it built its name on. Here's the timing, costs, and gateway breakdown.
Round-trip economy from a US West Coast gateway to Taipei (TPE) runs $750 to $1,150 for most of the year, and EVA Air still flies the same Boeing 777-300ER it built its reputation on. Direct service from San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Houston means most US flyers can avoid a connection. The Taoyuan Airport MRT runs from the airport to downtown for less than 6 USD, and the city itself is one of the best-value Asian capitals once you're on the ground.
Why Taipei, and why now
Taipei does not get the search volume of Tokyo or Bangkok, which is exactly why the fares stay reasonable. Two carriers (EVA Air and China Airlines) compete head-to-head for the same pool of US flyers, with United, Delta, and ANA filling in via Tokyo or Seoul connections. The result: stable pricing, multiple departure days, and award space that opens further out than most Asia routes.
I worked Asia ticketing on the consolidator desk for years, and Taipei was one of the rare sectors where consolidator and online prices stayed within 10 percent of each other. The market is competitive enough that the published fares are usually fair.
Airlines and gateways
Direct service from the US in 2026:
- EVA Air: SFO, LAX, SEA, IAH, JFK to TPE
- China Airlines: SFO, LAX, ONT, SEA, JFK to TPE
- United: SFO and IAH to TPE seasonally
For flights to Asia that connect through Tokyo or Seoul, ANA and Korean Air provide solid alternatives, particularly for East Coast flyers who don't want a transcon plus a Pacific leg on the same calendar day.
EVA Air's Royal Laurel business class on the 777-300ER is one of the better hard products in the Pacific market. It compares favorably to the Cathay Aria suite at lower cash fares and is occasionally cheaper than US carriers on the same route. For redemption mapping, our business class flights page tracks current EVA and China Airlines award availability against cash.
When to go
Taipei sits in a subtropical zone. Summer is hot, humid, and gets typhoons. Winter is mild but rainy. Spring and fall are the best windows on weather and price.
| Month | Weather | Avg paid economy (US-TPE round trip) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jan | 60s F, rainy | $750 to $900 | Lunar New Year price spike, usually late Jan or early Feb |
| Feb | 60s F, rainy | $1,100 to $1,500 in CNY week | Avoid CNY week if possible |
| Mar | 65 to 75 F, dry | $750 to $950 | Mild, clear, low crowds |
| Apr | 70 to 80 F, mild | $800 to $1,000 | Great weather, more crowds |
| May | 75 to 85 F, mild | $800 to $1,050 | Plum rain season starts late May |
| Jun | 80s F, humid | $850 to $1,100 | Typhoon season opens |
| Jul | 85 to 95 F, humid | $1,000 to $1,400 | Peak summer, peak prices |
| Aug | 85 to 95 F, humid | $1,000 to $1,400 | Typhoon risk highest |
| Sep | 75 to 85 F, mild | $850 to $1,050 | Good shoulder, occasional typhoon |
| Oct | 70 to 80 F, dry | $750 to $950 | Best month overall |
| Nov | 65 to 75 F, dry | $700 to $900 | Cheapest with reliable weather |
| Dec | 60s F, rainy | $800 to $1,100 | Holiday spike late Dec |
October and November are the windows. November is the cheapest month with reliably nice weather, and EVA tends to release good award space on the SFO and LAX flights three to four weeks out.
Getting from TPE to the city
Two ways from the airport:
- MRT (Taoyuan Airport Line). Express trains run roughly every 15 minutes, 35 minutes to Taipei Main Station, around 5 USD. This is the move.
- Taxi. Around 35 USD to central Taipei, 45 minutes in normal traffic. Useful if you arrive after midnight or with heavy luggage.
There's also a single international airport, Taoyuan (TPE), and a domestic-only field, Songshan (TSA), in the city itself. International arrivals are nearly always TPE. If you're connecting onward to Tokyo or Hong Kong on a separate ticket, double-check which airport, since Songshan handles a small number of regional flights too.
On-the-ground costs
Taipei is one of the cheapest major Asian capitals for US flyers in 2026. Approximate daily costs:
- Mid-range hotel in Da'an or Zhongshan: 75 to 120 USD per night
- Cheap night-market dinner for two: 15 to 25 USD
- Mid-range restaurant dinner for two: 50 to 80 USD
- Taipei MRT day pass: 5 USD
- 90-minute high-speed rail to Kaohsiung (round trip): 90 USD
A week in Taipei runs most US travelers between 80 and 200 USD per day all-in, depending on hotel level. The food alone justifies the trip; the night markets are a separate cuisine from the sit-down restaurants and worth working into the daily routine.
Visa and entry
US passport holders can enter Taiwan visa-free for stays up to 90 days. For current rules and any temporary changes, check the State Department's Taiwan information page. Taoyuan Airport handles immigration efficiently for arriving Americans, typically 20 minutes from gate to curb at off-peak hours.
For onward connections within Asia from Taipei, the TPE airport page has current routes and schedules to Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
Common rookie mistakes
- Flying through Hong Kong from the East Coast. Adds an hour over a Tokyo or Seoul connection, and ATC delays at HKG are real.
- Booking the cheapest EVA fare bucket without checking which 777 is operating. Royal Laurel and Premium Laurel cabin refurbs vary by aircraft. Check the seat map before clicking buy.
- Trying to do day trips to Taroko Gorge from Taipei. The drive is 4 hours each way. Plan an overnight in Hualien instead.
- Underestimating typhoon-season rebookings. EVA and China Airlines are flexible on weather cancellations, but summer weather will reroute you regardless.

Frequently asked questions
Do US travelers need a visa for Taiwan in 2026?
No. US passport holders can enter Taiwan visa-free for up to 90 days, with onward proof of travel and a passport valid for the duration of the visit.
What's the best month to fly to Taipei from the US?
November. Mild and dry weather, no holiday spike, and round-trip economy fares typically settle in the $700 to $900 range from West Coast gateways.
Is EVA Air better than China Airlines?
Both run reliable Pacific service. EVA's Royal Laurel biz product is generally rated higher, but China Airlines has a refreshed A350 and better award availability on some dates. Compare on the specific date pair.
How much should I budget per day in Taipei?
80 to 200 USD per day for most US travelers, depending on hotel level. Food is cheap, transit is cheap, and the hotel decides your spend.
Is the airport express train worth it over a taxi?
Almost always. Faster than a taxi during rush hour, predictable cost, and drops at Taipei Main Station with subway connections everywhere. Take the taxi only after midnight or with a lot of luggage.
